This Is England

A vicious band of racist thugs strikes out against other ethnic groups.
…Oops, accidentally cut and pasted my synopsis of Frank Miller’s 300.
Hey, this is England too!:

Underdog

Spoiler alert: it’s a dog dick.

Molière

Saucy saucy!  Awh hawh hawh!  This tale of ribaldry had me quivering in my pantaloons!  I adore movies where one guy secretly uses some other guy’s talents to trick a girl into falling in love with him.  Lucky for me they come out about once a week.

Arctic Tale

OK, get this.  Last year, this guy tells me he has a great idea for a movie.  Here’s his pitch: “It’s The Incredible Journey meets Fahrenheit 9/11.”  I told him that was the worst idea I had ever heard.
And then he goes, “No, wait, I got a better one.  It’s March Of The Penguins meets [...]

Who’s Your Caddy?

Who’s Your Caddy? is a neat twist on the usual slobs-versus-snobs golf comedy.  This one is black-guy-versus-sex-offender.  Did I enjoy this movie?  I’ll just say that, like Jeffrey Jones, I’m going to have to plead “no contest.”

DVD Review: The Number 23

Jim Carrey shines again in this edgy remake of Groundhog Day. Carrey plays Walter Sparrow, a struggling actor who finds a magic book. Don’t read it, Walter! (Spoiler alert: he totally reads it.) He then is forced to live the same day over and over again. This is one of [...]

El Cantante

El Cantante picks right up where Nacho Libre left off. Jennifer Lopez stars as “Bootymax”, and Marc Antony (Mark Anthony? Marcus Antonicus?) is “Rotavirus”, a whirling dervish of a man in green spandex and really big sunglasses who runs roughshod through the ring, through her life, and her intestines.Jennifer is the one in the mask [...]

Hairspray

While I applaud Hairspray’s bold and defiant stand against keeping black people from dancing on TV, I am even more pleased to see Hollywood speaking out for gay marriage.
Not since Birdcage have two married men been so entertaining. John Travolta and Christopher Walken play loving parents to Ricki Lake Jr, and the most encouraging [...]

No Reservations

I was totally surprised by No Reservations. Judging by the name, I thought for sure it was going to be about people who held no limiting qualifications about things. Like, they don’t have any problem with it. Because also, the tagline is “Life isn’t always made to order,” which to me means that [...]

Lady Chatterley

I’m all for remakes (especially of Cinemax classics), but I was extremely disappointed by Lady Chatterley.
I mean: sweatpants?  Are you serious?
