A Mighty Heart
Do you know what the number one killer of men is? It’s not drunk-driving accidents or post-vacation syphilis—it’s heart disease. In fact, heart disease kills an estimated 5,000 men every hour in this country, more than autoerotic asphyxiation and lightning strikes combined. It’s a serious topic, one that deserves more than it’s given in this latest Joliefest, where the maternal beauty sheds her Laura Croft-style machine guns for maraccas, playing south-of-the border siren Daniela Pearle. As a bar owner in rolicking, anything-goes town where the only thing colder than the margaritas is the service, Pearle doesn’t have the chance to fall in love, until she meets Dan, an American businessman whose idea of exercise is a 12-ounce bicep curl. Not to spoil the ending, but Dan’s french-fry-laden past catches up with him big time just when Daniela begins to think she might want a little more northern exposure. The movie could use a little heft, but if you’re hungry for a light summer movie, A Mighty Heart might be just what the cardiologist ordered.
