Becoming Jane
I walked into this film thinking I had it all figured out, given my recent screenwriting correspondence course, the title and the actress: TCA (Transformational Character Arc) implied by use of present progressive tense in title (the “ing”), with an alternative interpretation per Merriam Webster: “be·com·ing : adjective : 15th century : suitable, fitting; especially : attractively suitable .”
So, even though the clever Wildebeast Fancies Versace title of that other horrid movie threw me off, I thought this was going to be Anne Hathaway in essentially the same movie with different period costume. More darts, fewer bangs. (Referring to dress and hair style).
Boy, was I wrong.
Instead, in the tradition of “The Three Faces of Eve” and “Sybil,” the title is but a coy hint at the transformation of JJ, Jay and Jayne to, finally, Jane. I’m not going to tell you any more, but if you thought Sybil’s mom was scary just wait till you see the folks our Janie has to deal with.
