Hairspray
While I applaud Hairspray’s bold and defiant stand against keeping black people from dancing on TV, I am even more pleased to see Hollywood speaking out for gay marriage.
Not since Birdcage have two married men been so entertaining. John Travolta and Christopher Walken play loving parents to Ricki Lake Jr, and the most encouraging sign is that no one in the film points out the fact that John Travolta’s character is a fat gay man in crappy makeup and a fake accent. That adds to the feeling of togetherness and acceptance that weaves itself throughout the picture like a ribbon in a Maypole dance.
Although there is no formal kidnap and torture, Ricki Lake Jr’s character does get cruelly mocked, so we’re still on pace for an All-Summer Woman-Torture Season.

but isn’t it neat that they took the musical and made it into a movie?
